Knob & tube (K&T) was standard in homes built before the 1950s. It uses ceramic knobs and tubes to run individual wires. It isn't automatically dangerous, but it's ungrounded, brittle with age, and often modified unsafely over the years.
Many insurers won't cover a home with active knob & tube, or they charge much more. It also can't safely handle modern electrical loads, and damaged sections are a real fire risk.
